Canine Massage
Why Massage?
Many dogs of all sizes, breeds, ages and activity levels may enjoy and benefit from massage. Some specific benefits may include:
Reduction of muscle tension and the potential for injury.
Improvement of range of motion.
Increase in circulation to promote healing and overall wellness.
Reduction in pain and discomfort from muscular imbalance.
Improvement in overall muscular balance.
Increase in muscle tone and reduction of atrophy.
Improvement of the condition of skin and coat.
Reduction in recovery time from injury or surgery.
Improvement of athletic performance.
Reduction in stress and tension.
Canine massage is much more than petting a dog. It is the deliberate and focused manual manipulation of muscles and joints to improve their condition and function.
Dogs that may benefit from massage:
Dogs participating in performance events (agility, flyball, obedience, field trials, herding etc.).
Working dogs (guide dogs, service dogs, police dogs, search and rescue dogs, sled dogs, herding dogs etc.).
Older dogs.
Dogs recovering from injury or undergoing post-surgery rehabilitation (in consultation with your veterinarian).
Shy or recently adopted dogs (reduce stress and anxiety and build confidence).
Really...any dog!
Canine massage is provided in the following general categories:
Canine Athlete Massage: Pre and post event massages as well as ongoing maintenance massages to improve muscle function and performance and prevent stiffness and soreness.
Rehabilitation Massage: Post-injury and post-surgery massage done in consultation with your veterinarian.
Geriatric Care Massage: Treatment of elderly animals suffering from stiffness, arthritis and poor circulation to improve mobility and quality of life.
Relaxation Massage: Provide a sense of calm to dogs under stress.
All massages are customized to each individual dog. The initial session will include a detailed health questionnaire, an assessment of the dog's movement, a review of the goals of massage and the initial massage. This initial massage may only last about 15 minutes if the dog is not used to massage. Follow-up massages will include an update on the dog's health including their response following the initial massage and usually about 20-30 minutes of massage work. The length of the massage will depend on the dog's tolerance of massage and the goals for massage.
Frequency for massages will range from once a month for regularly active dogs to every two weeks for canine athletes to once a week for dogs undergoing rehabilitation. However, the frequency of massages will always be customized to each dog.
Massage appointments will take place in the arena at The Farm Ashburn or at agility trials.
